ME: My father, my mother brought me up to love Soviet power.

THE OLD MAN: It is not enough to love Soviet power. Soviet power has to love you. (He lifts his nightshirt and begins harvesting lint from his belly button as he crafts one of his befuddling afterthoughts.) Listen carefully, kid, memorize what I’m about to tell you, write it down when you get home. No chain is stronger than its weakest link (is what he finally comes up with when he runs out of lint).

ME: Can you repeat that?

THE OLD MAN: No.

I sense that his Soviet power has to love you and his No chain is stronger than its weakest link are related, but I’m not sure how. Yet.
